More than 30,000 people turned out Thursday on Portland’s Eastern Promenade overlooking Casco Bay for fireworks and the annual Fourth of July performance by the Portland Symphony Orchestra. In addition to traditional patriotic music (and a performance of “American Pie” by pop legend Don McLean), the PSO honored Maine’s oldest college with a performance of “Remembering Tilly,” a medley arranged by Bowdoin emeritus board member Terry D. Stenberg ’56. The concert included five songs synonymous with Bowdoin history and tradition: “We’ll sing to Old Bowdoin,” Forward the White,” “Beneath the Pines,” “Raise Songs to Bowdoin,” and “Bowdoin Beata.”
