It’s no surprise that print media has been struggling, and a new Bureau of Labor Statistics survey illuminates the current state of the industry with hard numbers. Newspaper, book and directory publishing jobs declined 36 percent since 1990. And total spending-per-person on newspapers and magazines has fallen 47 percent since 1999, according to The Atlantic.

But there were some surprises. Software publishing jobs have grown by less than 1 percent since 2001. Also, between 2010 and 2020, photographers are expected to increase by 17,500, the largest jump among media-related jobs.
